The temple was built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century in Yasodharapura ( present-day Angkor), the capital of the Khmer Empire, as his state temple and eventual mausoleum. Breaking from the Shivaism tradition of previous kings, Angkor Wat was instead dedicated to Vishnu. As the best-preserved temple at the site, it is the only one to have remained a significant religious center since its foundation. The temple is at the top of the high classical style of Khmer Architecture. It has become a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on the Cambodian National Flag. Back to the town and drop off at hotel.
Day 3 : Jungle Temple & Koh Keh Group
After breakfast, transfer to visit Beng Mealea lost in the jungle and almost forgotten by the local population and takes 50 km from the town. Next, visit Koh Ker temple group. The archaeological site of Koh Ker, UNESCO on September 17, 2023, is a sacred urban ensemble of numerous temples and sanctuaries including sculptures, inscriptions, wall paintings, and archaeological remains. Constructed over a twenty-three-year period, it was one of two rival Khmer Empire capitals – the other being Angkor – and was the sole capital from 928 to 944 CE. Established by King Jayavarman IV, his sacred city was believed to be laid out on the basis of ancient Indian religious concepts of the universe. The new city demonstrated unconventional city planning, artistic expression and construction technology, especially the use of very large monolithic stone blocks. On the way back, we visit Tonle Sap Lake (the largest fresh water in South East Asia) to see the fascinating floating Village called Kompong Khleang, village houses on high stilts above the water.
